Sora

Sora does know something weird is up, though:

"I've been having these weird thoughts lately.

Like

Is any of this for real?

Or not?"

Oh, gosh, the more I think about this, the scarier it becomes.

During Days:

Xion = Sora.

Memories are what makes up a heart.

Xion is Sora's memories contained in a phyiscal shell.

Roxas liked Xion, because they are the same person.

Xion is Sora's heart attempting to reach Ven's heart, and heal his pain.

But Ven's heart, all he sees is the negative.

Xion had its epiphany, it was Sora's heart realizing he had to go back to where he belonged. This is why Xion and Riku get along so well: because Xion IS Sora.

For a while, Sora's heart did reach. Ven's heart was getting better. But when the time came for Sora's heart to return where it belonged, Ven's heart didn't understand. All he understood was that he destroyed Sora. He had to watch Sora die, because of what he did.

He was losing a loved one all over again.

This is why Roxas pushes Axel away at the end of Days, too: he's afraid that he'd end up getting Axel killed, too.

Ventus loved Axel because he remembered Lea. Ventus puts great stock in holding on his memories, because he'd lost his memories before.

The end of Days, when Roxas goes back to TWTNW:

Riku: Why do you have the keyblade? Roxas then stops. He pauses, looks down at his keyblade. He doesn't know. He had admitted as much himself. But, after that small pause, like a shadow swooping over him, he continues his brutal assault, blind with anger, hatred, sadness, searing sorrow.

"Shut up!"
"Sora, Sora, Sora! Enough about Sora!" <---he obviously feels broken up about what happened to Sora.
"I want Xion ((Sora)) back. I want my LIFE BACK!" <---Ventus wanting his old life.
Riku is confused.
"Trust me. Approach Kingdom Hearts and the last thing you'll get is your life back."

Riku and Ansem the Wise both notice something is strange. Nobodies aren't supposed to have feelings or hearts, but Roxas is an obviously special case. Naminé, Riku, and Ansem all tried at one point or another to reach Ventus's heart, but Ventus fought tooth and nail every step of the way.

"At last, they keyblade's chosen one."
"Who are you talking to? Me? Or Sora?"
"To half of Sora, of course. You reside in darkness. I need someone who can move about the realm of light and destroy Organization XIII."
If Roxas had been a normal Nobody, he would've probably went along with the flow, and been like A-okay with it.

But Ven is still influencing him heavily. By the end of the Twilight Town introduction, Ventus is in full control of the Nobody.

"Who are you?" "I'm a servant of the World. And if I'm a servant, you should consider yourself a tool, at best."
"Was that ... supposed to be a joke? CAUSE I'M NOT LAUGHING!

"You should share some of that hatred with Sora. He's far too nice for his own good."
"No! MY HEART BELONGS TO ME!"

But Ansem forced them to merge again. Ventus didn't have a choice. He finally gives up.

"Sora ... you're lucky. My summer vacation is ... over."

Ventus also knows that Xemnas is Terra. Terra, too, had been trying to help him.

"So, sleep has taken you once again ... Will he wake from this?"
"I'm told he will."

The reason Xemnas wanted Kingdom Hearts was to take Ven's heart back.
With Kingdom Hearts, he would have enough power, as an emotionless Nobody, without a keyblade, to challenge a pair of keyblade masters and take back Ven's heart.

"Can you spare ... a heart?"

Why Sora specifically? Xemnas never meant to kill Sora, he only wanted to extract Ven's heart. But it's an extremely painful process, and Riku cannot STAND to have to see Sora in pain. So Riku goes and saves Sora, and blocks Xemnas from regaining his friend.

Xemnas, not knowing what happens when Nobodies fade back into darkness, is resigned, hopeless, defeated.

"Unfortunately ... I do not ..."
